School District GIS Applications Now on the Web
Davis Demographics and Planning (DDP) is an ESRI business partner that focuses on key functions that all school districts need to perform: demographic forecasting, facility planning, establishing attendance zones, and providing school locators. DDP has created SchoolSite, a family of ArcGIS extensions designed to tackle the heavy work of redistricting and enrollment forecasting. These extensions were converted to Web-based applications using ArcGIS Server, which gives small- to medium-sized enrollment districts the power of GIS without software installation, extensive training, or up-front data development. See SchoolSite Online.
ArcGIS 9.3 Service Pack 1
Late in 2008, ESRI released service pack 1 for ArcGIS 9.3, covering both the server and desktop applications such as ArcView. Service packs contain important performance improvements and maintenance fixes. Users of ArcGIS Desktop products (ArcView, ArcEditor, ArcInfo) should download and install one file to update the core software and one file to update the help file content. Download ArcGIS 9.3 Service Pack 1.

Hannibal Central School District Going Spatial
Hannibal Central School District in New York has acknowledged GIS on its Web site. Students in all grades and subjects are encouraged to engage in spatial thinking, so the district has organized links for its teachers to consider. The Careers section drives home that the technology is relevant to all students. See how this district has tried to help its students and teachers be spatial thinkers.
ESRI U.S. Community Atlas
Schools and youth groups in the United States are submitting Community Atlas projects for the 2008-09 school year. These projects earn participants software, maintenance, books, or instructional materials. Projects are small profiles, consisting of 10-20 maps and 1,000-2,500 words that follow a set of guidelines, created by youth about their communities. Groups can submit projects at any time until May 22, 2009. See the Community Atlas.
