ArcGIS Explorer New Release—Build 480
Some important new capabilities will be available in the next release of ArcGIS Explorer. This free, downloadable, 3D geographic data browser will support Geographically Encoded Objects for RSS feeds (GeoRSS) as well as ArcGIS Server, ArcIMS, and Web Map Server (WMS). The new version will provide even stronger support for KML and graticules and the ability to display reference grids. Check out all the entries on the ArcGIS Explorer blog and the EdCommunity Blog, then look for the 480 version!

SchoolSite™ K–12 District Demographic Software
Across the country, school districts need to adjust to changes in enrollment. The SchoolSite tools from Davis Demographics are GIS applications for school districts. SchoolSite Planning Suite for ArcGIS consists of two extensions to ArcGIS Desktop, the Enrollment Forecasting and Redistricting extensions. SchoolSite Online is an Internet-based application. For demographic planning at the school district level, check out these tools.

Community Sourcebook
Community Sourcebooks provide current and comprehensive demographic trend information including more than 80 data variables for every U.S. ZIP Code or county. The latest versions carry the most up-to-date data; for those on a tight budget, previous editions of sourcebooks are available in the ESRI Store while supplies last.

Mars Data
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA) Planetary Interactive GIS-on-the-Web Analyzable Database (PIGWAD) site offers a wealth of planetary information including lots of information for Mars. On the heels of the recent landing, check out the Mars viewers. Since the data is distributed via ArcIMS, you can view it in your browser or bring it into ArcExplorer–Java Edition for Education, ArcGIS Explorer, or ArcView.

Getting Started with GIS—Free Web Course
A new free course is available for people with no GIS background or experience who want to use ArcGIS Desktop (ArcView, ArcEditor, or ArcInfo versions 9.2 or 9.3) to learn the basic features of a GIS and the geographic approach to solving problems. Users learn how GIS maps are different from other types of digital maps and how to use ArcGIS software to obtain information, create thematic maps, and apply common analysis tools to geographic problems. For a detailed course description and access to the course, visit the ESRI Training and Education center.

Our World GIS Education
Our World GIS Education, the new book series by ESRI Press, helps educators introduce and extend GIS education into primary, secondary, and postsecondary curricula while providing students with the tools to build spatial thinking, analysis, and decision-making skills. Each book includes ESRI software, GIS data, exercises, lessons, and more. The books are arranged by levels (1–4) for basic to more advanced instruction. See which book will fit best with your curriculum.

User News

Youths at the ESRI Education User Conference
The ESRI Education User Conference (EdUC) is coming soon. Hundreds of GIS-using educators will gather in San Diego, California, August 2–5, 2008. This year, youths ages 14 and up are eligible to attend as part of a special youth group. See the registration guidelines. The EdUC overlaps the ESRI International User Conference, August 4–8, so there will be plenty of competition for hotel rooms. The San Diego Concierge may be able to assist you. Visit www.sandiegoconcierge.com or call 1-800-979-9091 for more information.

Exhibit Your Best Maps at ESRI User Conference
Share your best GIS work with others in the Map Gallery at the 2008 ESRI International User Conference (ESRI UC) in San Diego, California. Submit your entries by July 7, 2008. Some maps will also be published in the annual ESRI Map Book. Listen to tips on how to make an effective map [MP3] provided by ESRI UC Map Gallery judges Jonathon Corbridge and Ian Sims.
