GIS Education Community Portal

We give special focus in this issue to the GIS Education Community portal. Since being unveiled at the 2007 ESRI Education User Conference, the portal has become an even more valuable resource for educators.

The descriptions below highlight the resources that you will find in each section of the portal. Navigation is simple. Open the portal and note the tabs at the top of the page. Using your cursor, hover over each tab to engage quick pull-down links to critical information customized for educators.

Community Tab: This is the section where you are an owner and author! We need you to tell us about your situation.

GIS in Education Calendar: Post information about your event or look for important events that you might attend. There are many great conferences, training sessions, workshops, and institutes that deal with GIS in education!

Your GIS Story: This is a "best practices" zone. What's going on at your site that works well? Even a small thing that helps you can help others, too. Share how you use GIS effectively and explore how others do it.

Community Atlas: Check out the set of projects done by school and community youth groups across the United States. Show schools how they can earn GIS software!

Find a GIS Program: Check out the colleges and universities with GIS on campus. See where it is being used across the campus and around the world.

The Forums: A quick link to the forums ESRI has been running for years that deal with various aspects of GIS in education. Many issues have been addressed in the forums, with users talking to users, so this is a unique resource. Be sure to set the default time to more than a month to see the most entries.

Blog: A grab bag of useful tips and tricks and quick thoughts about education from the education team and users. Stay tuned between e-newsletters for insight into the latest discoveries or for time-honored strategies.

The ESRI Education Industry Team: Meet our team!

Software Tab

Web Mapping: Thousands of Web sites use ArcIMS or ArcGIS Server to distribute data. We've highlighted some so you can get started making maps using just a Web browser. This is an excellent first step for introducing someone to GIS.

ArcWeb Explorer: This powerful map engine allows you to explore road maps and imagery of the world or your community, make demographic reports of custom regions in the United States, upload spreadsheets of point data, and print or share your maps.

ArcExplorer — Java Edition for Education: When you want to get started with a free and easy but powerful GIS package on Windows or Macintosh, ArcExplorer - Java Edition for Education does a terrific job. Check out the quick links to demos and online lessons!

ArcGIS Explorer: The newest member of the ArcGIS family takes a little getting used to before you see the power available in a complimentary 3D tool. This page links to all the critical resources including ArcGIS Online.

ArcGIS/ArcView: Link to the complete bank of information about this powerful, full-featured GIS application now being used in thousands of schools.

Mac OSX Support: Are you a Macintosh user? It may be surprising to find that there are several GIS options available to you.

Instructional Materials Tab

ArcLessons: View and download from a depository of 200 GIS lessons and contribute your own.
