The ESRI Education Community Web Portal is designed to facilitate the exchange of ideas and experiences, curricula, and data between GIS educators around the globe. The site is open to anyone with an interest in GIS in education and includes several tools for collaboration and exchange. Check the Community section for

The first phase of the ESRI Education Community was unveiled at the ESRI Education User Conference. Feedback and suggestions for future development are welcome.

Introducing the ESRI Mapping Center

The ESRI Mapping Center is a new Web site that helps users learn about cartographic concepts and best practices for mapmaking with ArcGIS. It is designed to provide quick answers to mapmaking problems. Visitors will find information and sample maps displaying a wide variety of cartographic techniques and effects along with tips and instructions on how to reproduce the featured effects on their own maps.

Many resources, including presentations by industry experts, tools, models, scripts, and styles for ArcGIS, are available for download.

ESRI Data & Maps 2007 Update

A 2007 update to ESRI Data & Maps is now available at no charge. This revision provides updates to more than 80 datasets including all the U.S. Tele Atlas and European basemap data. It also provides updated 2006 population estimates for the world by country and 2007 population estimates for the United States at multiple levels (block group, tract, ZIP Code, county, and state).

In addition, the update includes the StreetMap Pro streets for North America, based on 2003 Tele Atlas streets, with complete routing and geocoding capabilities. These streets replace the current StreetMap USA streets based on TIGER 2000.

New Books from ESRI Press

GIS Tutorial for Marketing
This book includes ArcGIS software tutorials designed to complement the standard curriculum of any undergraduate marketing program. Exercises include target marketing, customer profiling, retail site selection, managing sales territories, and more. The book includes a trial version of ArcGIS 9.2 and a data CD with samples of ArcGIS Business Analyst and Community Tapestry Data.

Research and Theory in Advancing Spatial Data Infrastructure Concepts
This book presents the latest research on the technical, legal, economic, and institutional challenges involved in building national spatial data infrastructures (SDIs), particularly in developing nations. The book includes examples of how instrumental SDIs can be in disaster preparedness and poverty management, and it examines the integration of intellectual property rights within the framework of international SDI collaboration.

Building European Spatial Data Infrastructures
This book explores existing European SDIs and the efforts of the European Union to create a framework for a multinational Infrastructure for Spatial Information in Europe (INSPIRE). The institutional and decision-making context within which SDIs must be developed requires partnerships between the public and private sectors, and concerted government action will play a key role in helping INSPIRE overcome political and institutional barriers.

Cartographic Relief Presentation
Renowned Swiss cartographer Eduard Imhof devoted his career to raising the standards of map design. This revision of Imhof's masterpiece, Cartographic Relief Presentation, offers guidelines for properly rendering terrain in maps of all types and scales, whether drawn by traditional means or with the aid of a computer. This new edition of Cartographic Relief Presentation was edited for clarity and consistency but preserves Imhof's insightful commentary and analytical style.

Arc Marine: GIS for a Blue Planet
This book presents the initial results of a successful effort to create and define a data model that provides structure for storing and analyzing marine data for a variety of purposes including research, resource management, conservation, regulation, and commerce. The standards and best practices that emerged from the case studies in Arc Marine form a diverse set of resources to draw from as the marine community strives to understand, illuminate, chart, and explore the unknown depths.
