University of Redlands![]() 1200 E. Colton Avenue The University of Redlands is one of the oldest and most respected private institutions in Southern California. The school today is a thriving, private liberal arts college that offers many activities to students and community alike. Its newest addition is a GIS Education Center and an International Master's Degree Program in Geographic Information Analysis and Management. [PDF] Illustrious graduates of the past include Glen and Les Charles, producers and writers for television including the popular show "Cheers"; Robert Pierpoint, news correspondent; Conway Snyder, a key figure in America's space program; Robert Adams, internationally renowned photographer; and honorary alumnus Former Secretary of State Warren Christopher. The Redlands Symphony Orchestra is another attraction of the University, and the school has a strong music program. The school presents about 200 other cultural events each year including theater, arts, music, and dance. Well-known speakers are invited to the campus each year for a variety of programs, and convocation speakers have included Jimmy Carter, William F. Buckley, and Abba Eban. These convocations generally have a small admission fee for the public. In addition to specific events (call the University and ask for the Office of Campus Events for information about forthcoming events), several attractions are available year round for visitors to see. The Peppers Art Gallery, for instance, presents a variety of art and regularly has different shows. There is no charge for admission. Peppers is also the site of occasional poetry and literary readings, which take place weekday evenings. Ask the University operator for the Creative Writing Department if you would like information on upcoming readings. These are wonderful opportunities; writers giving readings have included Ray Bradbury, poets James Tate and Galway Kinnell, novelist Kathe Koja, and many others. No reservations, tickets, or admission fee are required for these readings, which often are followed by wine and cheese receptions. The University is also home to a healthy sports program that provides family entertainment from September to May. The University is especially proud of their 1996 Division III SCIAC Football Champs and their award-winning water polo teams. Call the Office of Athletics for a schedule of the Bulldogs games. You will find that the campus itself makes for a delightful stroll, with its huge oaks, unusual architecture, and abundance of shady spots. |
