ESRI Data

Overview

ESRI Business data consists of two databases: Business Summary and Business Location.

The Business Summary database utilizes geographic codes to report business data for summary areas such as states, counties, census tracts, block groups, and aggregations by ZIP Code.

Data variables include

  • Total number of businesses by industry classification
  • Total sales
  • Total number of employees

Business Location is a point-level database that includes both industry classifications—the former four-digit Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system and the updated and expanded six-digit North American Industry Classification System (NAICS).

In addition to these codes, the database also includes infoUSA's proprietary six-digit SIC and eight-digit NAICS industry codes, plus a special industry code for select industries. These codes provide more detailed information such as the number of rooms in hotels and motels, or the number of beds in hospitals and nursing homes.

Data variables include

  • Company name
  • City, state abbreviation, ZIP Code
  • Franchise codes (selected industries)
  • Industry code
  • Actual number of employees
  • Estimated sales volume
  • Census block group code or tract/county code

Who Uses Business Data

  • Commercial Real Estate firms—To make decisions about new site locations
  • Retail establishments—To compare daytime versus residential populations
  • Restaurants—To offer relevant menu choices and promotions to different populations
