ESRI 2009/2014 Demographic Trends

ESRI's 2009/2014 Updated Demographics reveal a number of changes and trends for the United States in 2009.

Housing Changes

  • Housing market downturn now affected by economic downturn
  • Foreclosures up 81 percent in 2008, with sharp increases since January 2009
  • 2009 median home value at $162,000, down 11.3 percent from 2008
  • 2008-2009 median home value declined in more than two-thirds of U.S. counties
  • Vacant units up by more than 8 percent; vacancy rate now 11.2 percent
  • At 66.2 percent, 2009 rate of homeownership now slightly less than in 2000

Economic Trends

  • Recession since December 2007
  • Unemployment rate up to 10.6 percent (not seasonally adjusted)
  • Job loss at -5.6 million in past year
  • Economy slowed by job loss, housing slump, credit crunch

Income

  • No growth in median household income (U.S. median: $54,700)
  • Median household income declined in 37 percent of U.S. counties
  • Median net worth declined by 7.6 percent to less than $98,000

Population Change

  • Pervasive slowing of growth and change in most markets due to decreased migration flows (both in- and out-migration)
  • Fastest-growing areas 2000-2009:
    • Flagler County, Florida
    • Kendall County, Illinois (Chicago metro area)
    • Rockwall County, Texas (Dallas-Fort Worth metro area)
    • Pinal County, Arizona (Phoenix metro area)
  • Fastest-growing ZIP Codes 2000-2009:
    • 89084—North Las Vegas, Nevada
    • 89086—North Las Vegas, Nevada
    • 89138—Las Vegas, Nevada
    • 80238—Denver, Colorado
  • U.S. median age in 2009: 36.9 years (+1.5 years since 2000)

Diversity and Population Change

  • Most diverse states: California, New Mexico, Texas
  • 2009 Hispanic population: 48.7 million, 15.7 percent of U.S. population
  • 2000-2009 Hispanic population growth: more than 3.5 percent annually
  • 2009 Asian population: 13.9 million, 4.5 percent of U.S. population
  • 2000-2009 Asian population growth: 3.4 percent annually
  • 2009 multiracial population: 9.1 million, almost 3 percent of U.S. population
  • 2000-2009 multiracial population growth: 3.2 percent annually
