- Map Layout and Cartographic Design with ArcMap
- Maps are sophisticated documents that can quickly convey complex messages and information. However, maps may not communicate their message effectively if they are inadequately designed. This seminar will discuss basic principles of cartographic design, as well as how to effectively use color, text, and feature symbology. The seminar exercises will build on this discussion by using ArcMap page layout tools to explore the many ways that users can create effective, well designed maps.
10:30 a.m.noon
- Working with the Geodatabase Data Model
- The geodatabase is the latest data model created by ESRI for representing real-world features and storing geographic data. This workshop introduces the basic components of a geodatabasetables, feature classes, feature datasets, and behaviors. Together, these components form the building blocks needed for geographic data input, query, display, and analysis. Participants learn how geographic data is stored in the GDB data model and how to work with features of the models that help maintain data integrity and accuracy. The workshop will focus on working with the File geodatabase and will discuss the different geodatabase storage options available at ArcGIS 9.3.
1:30 p.m.3:00 p.m.
- Getting Started with ArcGIS Server
- Are you interested in ArcGIS Server, the latest server based GIS solution from ESRI? Perhaps you've worked with ArcIMS before and want to know what ArcGIS Server can offer you. This workshop will introduce you to ArcGIS Server. You will learn how to make your maps, globes, and other GIS resources available to others by publishing them on a server. You will see how to create Web applications with ArcGIS Server Manager without writing code.
3:30 p.m.5:00 p.m.
- Getting Started with the ArcGIS API for JavaScript
- JavaScript provides new and exciting ways to create applications with ArcGIS Server. Learn how to build a lightweight mapping application with just a few lines of script and embed these programs into any Web site using ArcGIS Server. Exercises will use the sample servers in Redlands to make a basic but useful mapping application. You can also use these exercises when you return to your office to reproduce or extend your classroom work, regardless of whether or not you have ArcGIS Server installed in your organization. No prior experience in programming is required, just a willingness to learn fundamentals of scripting.
