Categories & Judging Criteria

Review the list of categories and judging criteria to help you select the most appropriate category for your entry.

General Criteria

ESRI UC Map Gallery judges will evaluate entries in all categories using the following general criteria. In addition, each entry will be judged on how it fulfills the design objectives for its category. Wall maps must be legible at the normal viewing distance for the Map Gallery (approximately 3-6 feet / 1-2 meters).

How to Make an Effective Map

  • Overall impact and impression
  • Well-communicated GIS/mapping subject or theme
  • Good combination of art and science
  • Elegant and professional map and presentation design
  • Effective use of ESRI software (clearly mentioned or indicated)
  • Appropriate entry (never shown) for the category
  • Originality
  • General cartographic and presentation quality
  • Clear and appropriate map or presentation title
  • Relevant map content: addresses the subject, logical classifications, proper level of detail, and accuracy
  • Effective layout (logical and efficient arrangement)
  • Effective use of symbology (meaningful, well-classified, distinguishable)
  • Effective use of text (correct labels or explanation of features, and classifications, good placement, and clarity)
  • Appropriate use of cartographic elements (legend, scale, north arrows, graticules, projection, index map, etc.)
  • Effective choice of colors (pleasant, balanced, distinguishable)
  • Output quality (appropriate map size, print resolution, stable media)
  • General application quality
  • Important and interesting subject
  • Scientific and practical values
  • Efficient use of tools and methods
  • Clear descriptions and conclusions

Best Overall Best Overall
The first place maps from each of the other categories will be placed in this category and judged against each other for best overall quality.
 
Best Data Integration Best Data Integration
Entries in this category will be judged for general quality and ability to show effective data integration according to the following criteria:
  • Variety of data sources (surveying, remote sensing, GPS, etc.) and data formats (raster, vector, text, etc.)
  • Cohesive presentation of the integration (explanation, illustration, etc.)
  • Relevance of the chosen data to the problem-solving and map-making processes
 
Best Software Integration Best Software Integration
Entries in this category will be judged for general quality and ability to show effective software integration according to the following criteria:
  • Variety of software (ESRI and third party products, in-house software, etc.)
  • Cohesive presentation of the integration (explanation, illustration, etc.)
  • Relevance of the chosen software and its contribution to the problem-solving and map-making processes
 
Best Analytical Presentation Best Analytical Presentation
Entries in this category will be judged for general quality and analytical presentation according to the following criteria:
  • Communication of the problem/project to be solved
  • Presentation of the analytical procedures
  • Complexity and logic of the analysis
  • Relevance of the problem-solving methods to the analysis
 
Best Instructional Presentation Best Instructional Presentation
Entries in this category will be judged for general quality and instructional presentation according to the following criteria:
  • Communication of a GIS concept or process
  • Step-by-step instructions (illustrations, explanations, etc.)
  • Logic and complexity of teaching methods and materials
  • Complexity of the procedures
  • Relevance of the geoprocessing methodologies and terminologies (appropriate and up-to-date)
 
Best Cartographic Design: Small Format Best Cartographic Design: Single Map Product—
Small Format

Entries in this category must be a single map product, no larger than 11 in. x 17 in. (A3). They may include newspaper or magazine page maps.
 
Best Cartographic Design: Large Format Best Cartographic Design: Single Map Product—Large Format
Entries in this category must be a single map product, larger than 11 in. x 17 in. (A3), but not exceeding 48 in. (122 cm). Optionally, the map can be from a product in a book or in bound form, consist of the whole product or a few selected pages, or include supporting text accompanying the map pages.
 
Best Cartographic Design: Press Copy Best Cartographic Design: Map Series or Atlas—Press Copy
Entries in this category must consist of a series of maps, no map larger than 21 in. (54 cm), printed professionally on a printing press. Entries in this category will be judged for general quality and cartographic quality as a map series or atlas (shown as press copy) according to the following criteria:
  • Consistency and distinction of the map design
  • Following a central coordinating theme (e.g., Atlas of Oregon, New Zealand Road Atlas)
 
Best Cartographic Design: In-House Copy Best Cartographic Design: Map Series or Atlas—
In-House Copy

Entries in this category must consist of a series of maps, no page larger than 21 in. (54 cm), printed on office quality media. Entries in this category will be judged for general quality and cartographic quality as a map series or atlas (shown as in-house copy) according to the following criteria:
  • Consistency and distinction of the map design
  • Following a central coordinating theme for a project (e.g., local government planning project)
 
Most Unique Most Unique
Entries in this category will be judged for general quality and uniqueness in the presentation and the application. The uniqueness will be evaluated according to the following criteria:
  • Unconventional and innovative ways of presenting the subject
  • Creative combination of arts and sciences that enhances the map or presentation
  • Unique use of cartographic presentation techniques
  • Uniqueness of the idea or subject being presented
  • Extraordinary and eye-catching impact that makes this entry stand out from others
 
Best Student Presentation Best Student Presentation (Kindergarten through 12th Grade)
Entries in this category must come from individual students or class groups ranging from kindergarten through 12th grade. Entries should include a list of the students as well as the supervisor(s)/teacher(s) who participated in creating the map. The supervisor(s)/teacher(s) should be mentoring and overseeing the creation of the map only. Entries in this category will be judged for general quality and information provided regarding the research project according to the following criteria:
  • Communication of a research project implemented in class
  • Explanation and presentation of the methodology, steps, and the results of the project or map creation
  • Complexity of the project relevant to the grade level
