Saturday Speakers

Candice Luebbering

Candice is a Senior Research Geographer at the American Association of Geographers, where she serves as Program Coordinator for the AAG-Esri GeoMentors Program. She assists with a variety of AAG projects and programs that include research, outreach, and membership engagement activities. Candice is a proudly self-labeled 'map nerd' who loves promoting and sharing geography and GIS with all audiences. She is an avid tea drinker, bike rider, and map hoarder owning more vintage atlases than articles of clothing.

Eric Gunderson

After teaching both middle school and high school geography, Eric Gunderson attended T3G and became the Esri Org admin for the St. Paul school district in 2014. He currently is a technology integration coach in the district and helps promote Esri and EarthXplorers with district training, in the local geography alliance, and at state and national conferences.

Erika Klose

Erika Klose is the West Virginia GIS Educational Implementation Coordinator and a middle school science teacher in West Virginia. A graduate of Smith College, Lehigh University, and Marshall University, Erika developed her interests in GIS while working as a marine geologist for the USGS. Erika now teaches seventh grade science in Winfield, West Virginia. She incorporates ArcGIS online into her science curriculum and uses it as a teaching tool on a regular basis. She works tirelessly to engage teachers across West Virginia and the US by offering technology workshops and maintaining active resource pages at

Roxana Ayala

Roxana Ayala is currently a third year undergraduate student in the University of California, Irvine, double majoring in Environmental Science (B.A.) and Urban Studies (B.A.). In 2014 she was a student speaker at the ESRI User Conference in San Diego, were she presented her research project about educational inequalities that exist within her community. Currently she is involved with ecological and educational research in the Upper Newport Bay Ecological Preserve in Newport Beach, CA. In the summer she will be an intern with the Natural Capital Project at the University of Minnesota’s Institute on the Environment, where she will work alongside urban planners and scientist to better quantify the value of parks and green infrastructure in cities by running simplified ecosystem service models using processes like GIS.

Scott Freburg

Scott Freburg (BS, MS) is the GIS Coordinator for the Minnesota Department of Education (MDE). With thirty years of experience in the GIS technology field, he has worked with the Montana Department of Natural Resources, Minnesota Geospatial Information Office and MDE. He manages all aspects of enterprise GIS at MDE and is the Primary Contact for GIS Licenses for school districts in Minnesota as well as principal coordinator for K12 GIS workshops, the Minnesota GIS Student Map Competition and the Education Committee within the GIS/LIS Consortium Board. He currently serves as Board Chair of the Minnesota GIS/LIS Consortium and on the Geospatial Advisory Council representing the Education community.

Sunday Speakers

Adrienne Goldsberry

Adrienne Goldsberry is currently a faculty member in Penn State University’s Online Geospatial Education Program, serving as an instructor and an advisor for students in the Post-Baccalaureate Certificate in Geographic Information Systems.

Prior to joining Penn State, she was an instructor for Michigan State University’s Department of Geography, Environment, and Spatial Sciences and managed its online Professional Certificate in GIS. She has also worked as an urban planner for jurisdictions in California, Texas, and Michigan. Adrienne holds a BA in Geography from The University of Texas at Austin, and earned her MS in Geography from UC-Santa Barbara.

Annaka Scheeres

Annaka Scheeres received a B.A. in Environmental Studies (Geography concentration) and a B.S. in Biology from Calvin College in Grand Rapids, MI.

After graduating in May 2016, Annaka was a Summer of Maps Fellow at Azavea, a geospatial analysis company in Philadelphia, where she was the project manager, GIS analyst, statistician, and software developer for projects with the American Red Cross and the Chemical Heritage Foundation. Previously she was a research fellow for Calvin’s Geography Department, visualizing ecological and social injustices within the local watershed. She currently works at the Philadelphia Department of Public Health, analyzing citywide public health initiatives.

Ian Muehlenhaus

Ian Muehlenhaus is the Director of UW-Madison’s Online Professional Master’s in GIS and Web Map Programming. He teaches map design and web cartography. He is the author of the book “Web Cartography” by CRC Press and has published many articles on map design. He has a Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota and a Master’s from Penn State.

Josef Strobl

Josef Strobl is head of the Interfaculty Department of Geoinformatics—Z_GIS at the University of Salzburg, Austria. He is leading the international UNIGIS network of distance education programs (, educational innovation initiatives in Asia and Latin America, and serves on the boards of international associations and publications in Geoinformatics and GIScience.

Josef Strobl is a full member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (ÖAW), chairing its Commission for Geographic Information Science. As the founder of the annual AGIT / GI_Forum Geoinformatics symposia he always looks forward to meet friends and colleagues at these and other events.

Seth Peery

Seth Peery is Senior GIS Architect at Virginia Tech. In this role, he manages the university’s on-premises and cloud-based GIS server infrastructure, performs system integration to spatially enable other administrative and research information systems, develops applications that facilitate access to university GIS data, and consults with faculty to incorporate GIS into their research and teaching.

As an advocate for geospatial data interoperability, both within the university and in partnership with external stakeholders, he works to lower barriers to the use of geospatial tools and methodologies in support of the university’s academic mission, and its internal operations.
