Marine Stewardship for Fisheries
Fishing management strategies for ocean stewardship address conservation concerns for fish populations and ecosystem impact. Jim Mosher and Matt Sarty, Clearwater Seafood Company, explain types of analyses used for fleet and harvest operations. This has helped the company target species as well as reduce sea floor footprints and damage to ecosystems.
Visualization of Sonar Data
New capabilities of multibeam sonars now make it possible to map fish and marine mammals, plumes and vents, mid-water targets, and physical oceanographic processes. Maurice Doucet, Quality Positioning Systems (QPS), describes commercial tools for processing and visualizing bathymetry, backscatter, and water column data acquired by hydrographic sonars. The discussion will also cover efforts to create geoprocessing tools that directly interact with this data from ArcGIS so that the hydrographic information is readily available to the GIS community.
