Pipeline data management is of critical importance in today’s regulatory environment. Data models are an integral part of the data management system because they are the tools used to store, integrate, and analyze data associated with the pipeline. A data model is based on a standard, a template, a proprietary model, or some combination of the three. Understanding the similarities and differences of each is important to pipeline operators, service providers, and regulatory agencies.

Pipeline data is viewed geospatially using GIS; therefore, a pipeline operator must choose the data management system that best meets the needs of their business. Each of these options can provide an operator with different opportunities; the selection of the appropriate type should be based on the organization’s data requirements, work flows, processes and culture. This presentation will discuss the criteria for selecting a model and two of the available industry options.
