User Presentations

More than 1,500 users give presentations each year during the User Conference, EdUC, and the Survey Summit. Analysts, developers, managers, and industry experts share insights into their applications and projects. The moderated sessions make up one of the most comprehensive collections of GIS papers in the world.

User presentations are divided into more than 40 tracks that are grouped into three major categories:

Technology

APD   Application Development
This track features GIS in design, architecture, and implementation strategies for desktop, enterprise, mobile, and Web-based applications.

CRT   Cartography and Map Production
This track explores topics ranging from map production workflows, cartographic geoprocessing, and thematic mapping to specific techniques for producing maps.

DBM   Database Design, Automation, and Management
This track focuses on database design, development, and implementation of GIS projects, including requirement analysis, data collection, data integration, and technical management.

ORG   GIS Organization, Management, and Implementation
This track presents best practices for those who manage and administer a GIS within an organization, whether large or small, government or private, or new or mature.

MET   Metadata and Data Publishing
This track presents best practices in the collection, storage, and dissemination of metadata and/or geospatial data.

NEW   New Technology and System Integration
This track is focused on new solutions that utilize ESRI software in innovative ways in Web services, mobile mapping, 3D visualization, document management, and digital imaging.

RSI   Remote-Sensing Imagery
This track covers aerial photography, satellite imagery, multi- and hyperspectral imagery, photogrammetry, classification, sensor technology, and feature extraction from imagery. Theoretical techniques and real-world applications are discussed.

SDI   Spatial Data Infrastructure
This track focuses on technical architectures, data models, and interoperability for those who are exploring or are in the process of organizing GIS assets, whether in the public or private sector. Special attention is given to building global and national spatial data infrastructures across communities.

SYS   System Implementation for GIS
This track focuses on system architecture design, implementation project planning, GIS deployment into existing IT environments, and exploitation of GIS resources by the enterprise.

Science and Modeling

ACH   Archaeology
This track features GIS in archaeology, historic preservation, cultural resource mapping, and interactive history projects.

CLI   Climate, Weather, and Atmosphere
This track examines GIS for atmospheric research and earth science, as well as applications for streaming real-time weather into mapping services.

ECO   Ecology and Conservation
This track examines GIS in wetlands conservation, biodiversity conservation, ecosystem evaluation, species management, habitat classification, and decision support.

MIN   Mining and Geosciences
This track examines GIS applications in geologic modeling, minerals exploration, slope stability analysis, seismic and volcanic studies, and geoscience projects.

MOD   Modeling
This track presents the use of environmental and urban models for research and decision support, including landscape visualization, viewshed creation, and watershed studies. The use of GIS for economic and other geostatistical models is also covered.

OCE   Ocean, Coastal, and Marine Resources
This track features GIS in a broad range of coastal, deep ocean, and marine biology applications, as well as the use of the Marine Data Model.

WRE   Water Resources
This track examines GIS in the study of surface and groundwater, water quantity and quality, and water resources management and modeling. A variety of GIS activities are presented including data collection and development, data modeling, water resources modeling, and GIS support for integration of external numerical models.

Industry

AGR   Agriculture
This track features GIS in scientific, business, and regulatory applications in the global food and agriculture system.

AEC   Architecture, Engineering, and Construction
This track features GIS in urban planning, architecture, civil engineering, construction, and facilities management (sites and buildings).

BIS   Business GIS
This track features GIS and consumer data for business operations, distribution and logistics, customer acquisition and retention, franchise protection, and more.

CDA   Cadastral and Land Records
This track features the integration of parcel data in the decision-making workflow for assessors, planners, recorders, environmental managers, public works officials, and others.

CEN   Census and Geodemographics
This track features GIS and census data in demographic analysis, regional and transportation planning, education, economic development, and federal programs.

DEF   Defense and Intelligence
This track covers GIS in the defense and intelligence communities, including enterprise infrastructures, niche applications, network-centric operations, and base operations.

DIS   Disaster Management and Emergency Response
This track covers GIS applications and data sharing in natural disasters, large-scale event response and management, emergency operations centers, and command and control settings.

EDU   Education
This track features GIS in primary, secondary, and higher education; libraries; and museums for teaching, administration, educational research, and GIScience research.

ELC   Electric and Gas
This track features GIS across the entire energy enterprise. Real-world experience is shared from large energy companies, municipal utilities, and regional cooperatives.

EMS   EMS/Fire
This track covers GIS in emergency medical services (EMS); E911; computer-aided dispatch; AVL; municipal fire; wildland fire, and fire planning, response, and analysis.

ENV   Environmental Management
This track covers GIS for habitat management, wetlands conservation, ecosystem evaluation, site remediation, environmental monitoring, and sustainable development.

FAC   Facilities Management New
This track features geospatial topics for those users who management facilities within an enterprise GIS environment.

FED   Federal Systems Implementation
This track features geospatial topics for federal systems including cover cooperative applications, modernization efforts, managing license agreements, and sharing data assets.

FOR   Forestry, Wildlife, and Fisheries Management
This track covers the use of GIS in forestry, wildlife biology, fisheries, and land and resource management.

HSS   Health and Human Services
This track looks at GIS methods and decision support in social services, environmental health, public health, hospitals, research, and health policy.

HOM   Homeland Security/Homeland Defense
This track covers GIS for homeland security, emergency planning and analysis, terrorism, bioterrorism, homeland defense (DOD), and grants and funding.

LAW   Law Enforcement and Criminal Justice
This track examines GIS in parole tracking, prison management, community policing, crime analysis, investigations, resource tracking, mobile/in-vehicle, Megan's Law/Amber Alert, E911, computer-aided dispatch, and AVL.

PET   Petroleum
This track examines GIS for oil and gas exploration and integration and interoperability across the petroleum enterprise.

PIP   Pipeline
This track covers Enterprise GIS for utilities and pipeline companies that operate high-pressure pipelines for gas and liquids, including integrity, asset and right-of-way management, common operating model, and real-time data integration.

PWK   Public Works New
This track features geospatial topics focused on the applications of GIS for public works projects and systems, including the management of data, tracking of projects, and planning for new infrastructure.

PNR   Parks and Natural Resources
This track explores GIS applications developed for national and local parks, reserves, and refuges; examples include wildlife tracking, invasive species management, and applications that enhance visitor experience.

PWK   Public Works
This track presents innovative GIS implementation in areas such as roads and streets, parks and grounds, traffic, engineering, solid waste, building maintenance, and administration.

ROI   Benefits of GIS
This track is aimed at senior executives, managers, and officers who want real-world examples of the benefits, value, and achievements made by GIS within government and utilities as well as public- and private-sector organizations. All levels of management are experiencing pressure to improve workflow, coordinate activity, optimize assets, and use resources more effectively and efficiently. GIS has long been recognized as a means to make better decisions, reduce costs, and create the framework to provide more informed, up-to-date, and relevant information to stakeholders. The track will cover how GIS is helping organizations realize these benefits and improve collaboration and information sharing, while empowering the GIS analysts and information officers to deliver more valuable and beneficial services to their user community.

STA   State and Local Governments
This track features GIS in agencies and departments of national, federal, state, and local governments for e-gov, public works, public safety, planning and economic development, public health, cadastre, and policy development and initiatives.

SUR   Surveying
This track focuses on integrating GIS and survey data, and presents tools and users involved in these technologies.

SUS   Sustainable Development and Humanitarian Affairs
This track focuses on international activities in sustainable development and humanitarian affairs, including topics in poverty mapping, peacekeeping, diplomacy, humanitarian response, development planning, and donor coordination.

TEL   Telecommunications and Location-Based Services
This track explores GIS in the workflow of designing and managing a communications network, from marketing and sales, network planning, customer relationship management, and workforce management.

TRN   Transportation
This track focuses on GIS in roadway and traffic management, mass transit, railroads, airports/aviation, seaports and waterways, and distribution fleet management. Topics cover infrastructure management, safety and security, planning and modeling, operations, ITS, and vehicle tracking and routing.

WDS   Water, Wastewater, and Storm Water
This track presents GIS in water operations, network management, capacity planning, and capital improvement projects, as well as the integration of GIS with other enterprise systems such as work management systems, document management systems, materials management systems, and customer information systems.
