ESRI 8th Annual Cave and Karst SIG Meeting Announced—Dr. Warren Campbell to Speak The Twenty-Fifth Annual ESRI International User Conference will be held July 25–29, 2005, at the San Diego Convention Center and Marriott Hotel and Marina in San Diego, California, USA. The conference presents a unique opportunity to learn from others and share GIS experiences. It's the largest GIS event of the year, with more than 12,000 expected to attend. The 8th Annual ESRI Cave and Karst Special Interest Group Meeting will be held Tuesday, July 26, at 12:15 p.m. in Room 26-A of the San Diego Convention Center. We are pleased to welcome Dr. Warren Campbell, Department of Civil Engineering, Western Kentucky University, as our guest speaker. Building a Groundwater Protection Model for Kentucky's Mammoth Cave Watershed The July–September 2004 issue of ArcUser includes a tutorial detailing the use of geoprocessing tools and ModelBuilder in ArcGIS 9 to construct a model to study groundwater contamination issues in Kentucky's Mammoth Cave watershed. The tutorial provides a detailed, step-by-step introduction to creating and implementing a geoprocessing model and includes downloadable sample data for the Mammoth Cave study area. Speleo-Education Seminar Features ArcPad Workshop In April, the Western Region of the National Speleological Society, with the cooperation and assistance of Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Park, ESRI, the Western Cave Conservancy, the Cave Research Foundation, and Great Basin National Park, hosted Speleo Ed 2005. Focusing on topics of an educational nature rather than exploratory, the Speleo-Education Seminar offered two tracks of sessions and workshops, including a Cave Inventory & GIS Track. An introduction to ArcPad for field data location was presented by staff members of ESRI and the Cave Research Foundation GIS Program and was attended by more than 40 participants including cavers and staff from Sequoia-Kings Canyon National Park and Great Basin National Park. GIS Workshop to Be Held at National Speleological Society Convention A special GIS for Cavers workshop will be conducted at the National Speleological Society's Annual Convention, being held in Huntsville, Alabama, July 4–8. Instruction is being sponsored by the Cave Research Foundation, and classroom materials have been donated by ESRI. The class will cover many fundamental tasks that cave and karst resource managers and cavers routinely need to complete while working with cave and karst data including project setup and establishing the GIS basemap. Other topics will include working with cave survey data from popular cave surveying programs such as Walls and COMPASS. The workshop will be conducted on Friday, July 8, at the convention site. For more information, visit www.nss2005.com. ESRI Announces ArcGIS 9.1 ESRI announced the availability of ArcGIS 9.1 in May. ArcGIS 9.1 is a full release of ArcGIS Desktop (ArcReader, ArcView, ArcEditor, and ArcInfo), ArcGIS Engine, ArcGIS Server, ArcIMS, and ArcSDE. In addition, the release of Network Analyst also coincides with the ArcGIS 9.1 platform. New features include improved geoprocessing capabilities, productivity enhancements, and many other additions and enhancements. Tenth Multidisciplinary Conference on Sinkholes and the Engineering and Environmental Impacts of Karst The Tenth Multidisciplinary Conference on Sinkholes and the Engineering and Environmental Impacts of Karst will be held September 24–28, 2005, at the DoubleTree Hotel in San Antonio, Texas. The event's sponsors are the Geo-Institute of ASCE, P.E. Lamoreaux & Associates, Inc., and the Edwards Aquifer Authority. Session topics will include GIS, databases, and other computer applications for karst. ESRI will be an exhibitor at the conference and is also a contributing sponsor of the event. New Virtual Campus Offerings of Interest to Cave and Karst Resource Managers The ESRI Virtual Campus offers a unique educational experience, providing long-distance learning opportunities covering a wide variety of topics. Several new courses are offered that are of interest to those involved with managing cave and karst resources. Creating and Integrating Data for Natural Resource Applications, a four-module course, teaches methods for acquiring, evaluating, creating, manipulating, and integrating data in preparation for analysis and map creation. Participants will learn tips for assembling a high-quality database as well as best practice approaches to data problems commonly encountered by those in the natural resource and conservation fields. The Virtual Campus offers 63 free training options to help users become successful in applying GIS technology. The offerings include courses with free modules along with other courses, workshops, and training seminars that are entirely free.
