Fulton County Courthouse

The first Court House of Fulton County was built in Lewistown from hewn logs in 1823.  This served until 1830, when the building seemed inadequate and a contract was given to John McNeil to erect another at a cost of $649.  In another seven years, this second building was decided to be unfit for the growing needs of the community. Two thousand dollars had been subscribed by citizens and it was ordered that a brick building with stone foundation be erected at a cost not to exceed $9800.  The first brick and stone courthouse was erected in 1838 and served until December of 1894 when it was destroyed by fire. The current Fulton County Courthouse was built in 1897 to replace the earlier Courthouse destroyed by fire.   This third building is referred to as the 'Old' Court House.  The "Old" Courthouse is still in use today.  Here Stephen A. Douglas sat as a judge of the Fulton County Court.
