Edgar Lee Masters

 

 
Lewistown is the home of the famous poet, Edgar Lee Masters.  Masters was born in Kansas and  was twelve years old when his family moved to Lewistown.  Masters remained there for the next ten years, and graduated from the Lewistown High School. It was in Lewistown that he heard the old rumors. stories and anecdotes about the people lying in 'Oak Hill' Cemetery, who became the substance of his famous work, 'The Spoon River Anthology'.  Masters died in 1950 at the age of 82 and is buried in Oakland Cemetery in Petersburg, Illinois.
