    Bangor is located in central Maine in Penobscot County. It is on the Penobscot River at the head of the tidewaters of the Atlantic Ocean. Bangor is the most northern point on the river navigable by seagoing vessels. This unique location between the north woods and coastal waters at 44.8 degrees north latitude, and 68.8 degrees west longitude was the principle reason for the founding of a city that would become the lumber capital of the world.
