Community Atlas Model Projects

At the close of each year, ESRI identified one model project. While there were other good projects each year, these projects stood out because of superior cartography, clear organization, powerful analysis, and good presentation.

The models were not elaborate in their Web design. Indeed, they stand out partly because the HTML is simple and does not distract the viewer from the focus of the project. Viewers can move forward and backward easily without being distracted by extraneous information or images.

Notice that, in each example, the maps form the heart of the story, and the text strings the story together. The maps are crisp, not fuzzy, and easy for viewers to interpret. Non-map images are absent from the Barrington and Lewistown projects, secondary to the maps in the Stillwater project, and generally embedded in in layouts the Lewiston project. The focus is on the story as presented by the maps and text.

No hard and fast design rules will yield a model project. Good cartography, good analysis, good writing, and good project design can each take varied forms. Creators should consider the project as a story being told to others, and will benefit by having other people view and critique the project before it is submitted.
