The principal land use in Barrington is residential. The oldest homes in Barrington date from the 18th century, but the majority of its houses were built since World War II. At the turn of the century, Barrington was a small stop on the trolley line from Providence to Fall River, Massachusetts, and was made up of a mixture of farms, seasonal waterfront summer cottages, and several industrial operations including a brick works, an artificial leather manufacturing plant, and a lace factory. After World War II, Barrington’s small farms and woodlands were replaced by houses for people commuting to jobs in the Providence metropolitan area. Today, its waterfront location and reputation for excellent schools continue to attract new residents to the community. |
