Rhode Island's "East Bay"

by Nick Anastasia

Narragansett Bay extends 28 miles into Rhode Island from the southern coast. The section of the state in which Barrington is located is known as the “East Bay.” The communities of the East Bay are Barrington, Warren, and Bristol in Bristol County, Rhode Island. This section of Rhode Island is closely tied to the neighboring communities of Bristol County, Massachusetts: Seekonk, Swansea, and Somerset. In the 17th century all of this area was part of Plymouth Colony. Massasoit, the Indian whose tribe came to the aid of the first Plymouth settlers, came from the eastern shore of Narragansett Bay in a section of the modern community of Barrington.
