GIS for Schools

Demographics and Redistricting

Density Map
County Density Map
The demographics of a school district are constantly changing. Its population size, composition, and distribution are tied to the larger geography of the community in which it rests. These invariable shifts mean dealing with districtwide changes in things such as total enrollment but more importantly with changes within the district, e.g., individual school facilities and attendance areas.

GIS is invaluable to guide planning, decision making, and reporting for tasks that reflect the ever-changing make-up of schools, including

  • Creating maps of school facilities with various characteristics.
  • Geocoding students by residential location and mapping SIS attributes.
  • Designing attendance boundaries and performing other redistricting functions.
  • Analyzing school facility capacities and needs and community development.
  • Relating demographics and facilities to other district departments and functions.
