Journey North

Powerful Educational Projects

Season after season, year after year, the migrations of animals and the change of seasons are a source of wonder and delight. Journey North is a project involving geography, science, and telecommunication, through which students across North America are tracking the movements of several species over the seasons.

For some species, scientists have attached tiny transmitters so they can track individuals; for others, the project tracks concentrations. The five thumbnail maps below are linked to the full images from the 1996 project.

Download the ETOPO5 data set used in this image in a ".ZIP" file, which contains an ArcView2 project and the data.

Monarch Butterfly
Monarchs Thumbnail
The Monarch spends the winter in a few isolated colonies in particular pockets of certain forests outside Mexico City. The map shows the nine colony locations, including El Rosario, the only site open for visits by the public. The base information for this map is from the Digital Chart of the World data set. Notice the elevations at which Monarchs spend the winter, and notice the number of towns nearby.

Barren Ground Caribou

The Caribou are wandering separately thru the harsh Canadian winter, but this may change as spring comes.

This Right Whale has been nicknamed after the Coast Guard ship that helped the whale.

The Loggerhead is a creature of the continental shelf. This image hints at one of the problems scientists face!
