Coastal Zone Management

Coastal zone in the Gulf of MaineCoastal zones include waters and adjacent shores of coastal lands as well as islands, transitional and inter tidal areas, salt marshes, wetlands, and beaches. The use of the shoreline has a direct and significant impact on the coastal waters and the large population centers that inhabit them. GIS is used to understand and control those geographical areas that are likely to be affected by or vulnerable to rising sea levels.

These coastal areas are under constant pressure from human-induced as well as natural phenomena. GIS helps coastal managers collect, organize, and interpret a vast amount of data. In addition, 2D and 3D GIS visualization tools help represent data in a format that readily shows trends and patterns.
