Developing a GIS Program
GIS is an expanding and evolving technology that is an essential tool in government and business. An industry growth rate of nearly 30 percent over the past four years has created strong demand for graduates trained in GIS and spatial thinking. To satisfy that demand, there has likewise been a tremendous growth of GIS programs in colleges and universities. While this rapid growth has presented educators with exciting challenges and opportunities, it has also added logistical, administrative, pedagogical, and curriculum demands that must be considered when implementing a GIS program.
Below are guidelines and other resources intended to support educators, researchers, and administrators in developing a successful and sustainable GIS program. These guidelines were compiled from a variety of documents and anecdotal interviews with GIS professionals and educators and are intended to provide suggestions on how to develop a GIS program.
