The Student Edition one-year time-out software uses the same installation as the Evaluation software, but limitation and term of use are modified to those for the Student Edition (see limits and term below).
No, it is not possible to extend the timeout period or reinstall the same Student Edition software on your computer once it has timed out.
If you still qualify for the Student Edition software, you may obtain another copy to install. You will need to first uninstall all previous ArcView software.
Yes, you need to register the ArcView 9.2 Student Edition and each of the extensions you wish to use with ESRI before you can begin using any of them. You can register via the ESRI Web site, e-mail, fax, or mail.
The 365-day evaluation begins once you have initiated the registration process and ESRI issues an authorization file. If you have installed the software but have not yet registered it, your evaluation time has not begun.
You can see the expiration information by using the ArcGIS Desktop Administrator. From the Start menu, select Programs, select ArcGIS, and click Desktop Administrator. To see the expiration dates, click on the Availability folder.
To install the full version of ArcView 9.2, you must uninstall the Student Edition of ArcView 9.2 and the ArcGIS extensions first. The registration number for the full version of ArcView 9.2 will not work with the Student Edition of ArcView 9.2.
To uninstall, use the Add/Remove Programs utility in the Windows control panel. From the Start menu, click Settings, then Control Panel. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon. Select ArcGIS Desktop from the program list. This will uninstall ArcView 9.2.
When you install ArcView 9.2, you are installing the ArcGIS Desktop applications ArcMap and ArcCatalog. ArcGIS is the name that appears in the Start program menu, not ArcView.
ArcView 9.2 consists of two desktop applications: ArcMap and ArcCatalog. ArcMap provides data display, query, and analysis. ArcCatalog provides data management. When you want to begin using ArcView, you need to open each of these applications (Start >Programs >ArcGIS> then choose ArcMap and ArcCatalog). Once open, each application window reads ArcMap–ArcView; ArcCatalog–ArcView.
ArcReader is a free, easy-to-use product that allows anyone to view, explore, and print published map files (PMFs). ArcGIS Publisher is an extension to ArcView that converts map documents (MXD) to PMFs. For more information on ArcReader, visit www.esri.com/arcreader.
Yes. The ArcGIS extensions work with ArcView 9.2. They are called the ArcGIS extensions since they work with ArcView 9.2, ArcEditor 9.2, and ArcInfo 9.2, collectively known as ArcGIS Desktop.
Once you have registered the extensions, you have 365 calendar days to evaluate the ArcGIS extensions. However, if you do not install the extensions within the first 365 days of your ArcView 9.2 evaluation time period, you will not receive the full 365 days available for each extension because when the core ArcView 9.2 software expires after 365 days, so do all the extensions.
No, it is not possible to extend the evaluation period or reinstall the Student Edition software on your computer once it has timed out.
If you still qualify for the Student Edition software, you may obtain another copy to install. You will need to first uninstall all previous ArcGIS Desktop software.
The 365-day evaluation begins once you have installed and completed the registration process for the ArcGIS extensions. If you are registering by e-mail, fax, or mail, the evaluation period begins when you initially contact ESRI. If you have installed the software but have not yet registered the extensions, your evaluation time has not begun. Even if you have registered ArcView 9.2 Student Edition, the 365-day extension evaluation period has not begun until you register each extension. You can install and register the extensions separately from ArcView 9.2.
When evaluating the ArcGIS Desktop extensions, you are not required to enter the registration numbers. During the registration process at the Evaluate the ArcGIS Desktop Extensions panel, check the boxes next to the extensions you would like to evaluate. The registration wizard will recognize the same registration number you used for registering the ArcView 9.2 Student Edition. The 12-digit registration number is located on the inside of the DVD sleeve.
When you begin the registration process for the ArcView 9.2 Student Edition, you will be prompted as to whether or not you would like to register the ArcGIS Desktop Extensions. You can then select the extensions you would like to try, or you can choose to register an extension at a later date.
If you did not choose to install the ArcGIS Desktop extensions during the initial installation of the ArcView 9.2 Student Edition, they can be added later. We recommend that you install and register the ArcGIS Desktop extensions at the same time as the ArcView 9.2 Student Edition. Your 365-day evaluation of the ArcGIS Desktop extensions only begins when you register the software and not when you install the software. Please see the student timeout software tips below:
Student Timeout Software Installation Tips
ArcGIS Desktop Installation GuideThe software DVD includes a link to a complete ArcGIS Desktop Installation Guide. It is recommended that students review this guide prior to installing the student software.
Registering ExtensionsRemind students to register extensions at the same time as they register the ArcView software.
If a student has not registered their extensions, they can do so at a later time by going to the Start/Programs/ArcGIS/Desktop Administrator menu. From there, the student can click on "Register Single Use ArcView and Extensions" and follow the registration wizard.
Activating ExtensionsStudents need to activate the extensions they wish to use by going to the Tools/Extensions menu and clicking on the extensions that they wish to use in ArcMap and ArcCatalog.
Yes, there are a number of included tutorials. These tutorials are searchable and readable from the help file within the application. The ArcGIS Tutorial data is located on the ArcView 9.2 Student Edition DVD.
Yes. The ArcView 9.2 Student Edition DVD includes PDFs for all ArcGIS Desktop tutorials including tutorials that work only with ArcEditor and ArcInfo. Therefore, some tutorials may cover material not applicable to the ArcView Student Edition. Examples include the ArcGIS 9 Geodatabase Workbook and the Using ArcGIS 9 StreetMap tutorials.
The ArcView Student Edition DVD includes PDFs for all ArcGIS Desktop tutorials including tutorials that work only with ArcEditor and ArcInfo. The Using ArcGIS 9 StreetMap tutorial refers to data that ships with the full version of ArcView, ArcEditor, and ArcInfo. Due to size constraints, this data is not available on the ArcView Student Edition DVD. Please note that the functionality of ArcGIS StreetMap is included in ArcView, ArcEditor, and ArcInfo. However, the size of the data provided with the full version prohibits its inclusion in the ArcView 9.2 Student Edition DVD.
The Student Edition of ArcView 9.2 and the full version of ArcView 9.2 are supported on Windows 2000 Professional, Windows 2003 (Server, Server Terminal Services), and Windows XP (Home, Professional). For more information, visit www.esri.com/arcview.
The minimum requirements are an Intel Pentium or Xeon computer with a 1 GHz processor, 512 MB RAM, and approximately 1 GB of free disk space.
Additional requirements for ArcGIS 3D Analyst are a 1.5 GHz processor, additional disk space for cache files, and an OpenGL 1.3 or above video card with 32 MB of video memory or higher.
Please note: Disk space does not include the 50 MB of system drive space needed for installation (typically C:\WINNT\system32). The disk space requirement for each of the ArcView 9.2 components is provided in the setup program.
