ArcView 9.1 Student Edition One-Year Time-Out Software

Show/Hide All Answers

Why does the install say “Evaluation” or “Demo” software?
The Student Edition one-year time-out software uses the same Install Guide [PDF-53.9 KB, 17 pages] as the Evaluation software, but limitation and term of use are modified to those for the Student Edition (see limits and term below).
What are the limits to my use of the Student Edition software?
ArcView Student Edition software may only be used for educational, research, and academic purposes and not for commercial use or resale.

Term of Use
The term of use is for one year (365 days), which starts upon registration of the Student Edition software.
If I have a full version of ArcView, ArcEditor, or ArcInfo installed, can I install the ArcView 9.1 Student Edition?
No. Do not install the ArcView 9.1 Student Edition if you already have a full version of ArcView, ArcEditor, or ArcInfo 8.x or higher installed.
If I am currently running ArcView 3.x, can I install the ArcView 9.1 Student Edition?
Yes. You can run both ArcView 3.x and ArcView 9.1 simultaneously. You do not need to uninstall ArcView 3.x before installing ArcView 9.1.
How long do I have to evaluate ArcView 9.1?
Once you have registered the software, you have 365 calendar days to use ArcView 9.1 and the Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst, Geostatistical Analyst, and Network Analyst extensions.
Can I extend my evaluation of ArcView 9.1?
No. Currently it is not possible to extend the evaluation period nor reinstall the Student Edition on your computer once it has timed out.
Do I need to register the software before I can use it?
Yes. You need to register ArcView 9.1 and the Spatial Analyst,
3D Analyst, Geostatistical Analyst, and Network Analyst extensions you wish to use with ESRI before you can begin using any of them. You can register via the Internet, ESRI Web site, e-mail, fax, or mail. Refer to the Evaluation Install Guide [PDF-53.9 KB, 17 pages] for complete details.

Please note that the registration process will not accept acronyms in the Company Name field. If you use an abbreviation for your university name in the Company Name field, you may receive a message stating: "This code is not valid for registration at this time." If you have already received this message, please contact ESRI Customer Service, at 888-377-4575.
I tried to register the Student Edition and I received a message stating: "This code is not valid for registration at this time." What does this mean?
This message can be the result of an abbreviation used in the Company Name field. If you enter your university name in the Company Name field, please do not abbreviate the name. If you have already received this message, please contact ESRI Customer Service, 1-888-377-4575.
Where do I find the registration number for the ArcView 9.1 Student Edition?
The 12-digit registration number is located on the back of the CD case.
What is the difference between a registration number and an authorization file?
The registration number is the 12-digit code located on the CD case. When you are ready to register, you will provide ESRI with that registration number, and we will in turn give you an authorization file so that you can activate ArcView 9.1 and the ArcGIS Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst, Geostatistical Analyst, and Network Analyst extensions. If you register via the Internet, this process happens automatically.
When does my 365-day evaluation of ArcView 9.1 begin?
The 365-day evaluation begins once you have initiated the registration process and ESRI issues an authorization file. If you have installed the software but have not yet registered it, your evaluation time has not begun.
How can I see when the Student Edition software expires?
Use the ArcGIS Desktop Administrator. From the Start menu, select Programs, select ArcGIS, and click Desktop Administrator. Click on the Availability folder.
I have just completed registering software using the e-mail option. Why doesn't the Desktop Administrator reflect the recent change?
The Desktop Administrator doesn't refresh until you click OK. Click OK and then restart the Desktop Administrator.
If I install a full version of ArcView 9.1, do I need to uninstall the Student Edition of ArcView 9.1? Can I use the registration number from the full version with the Student version software?
If you install a full version of ArcView 9.1, you must uninstall the Student Edition of ArcView 9.1 and the ArcGIS extensions, then install the full version of ArcView 9.1. The registration number for the full version of ArcView 9.1 will not work with the Student Edition of ArcView 9.1.
How can I uninstall the Student Edition of ArcView 9.1?
Use the Add/Remove Programs utility in the Windows Control Panel. From the Start menu, click Settings, then Control Panel. Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon. Select "ArcView 9.1 (Demo Edition)" from the program list. If you are using Windows NT, click the Add/Remove button. This will uninstall ArcView 9.1.
The install guide installed with the software mentions three CDs. Am I missing something?
The install guide installed with the software refers to the full version of ArcView 9.1. The full version of ArcView 9.1 provides three CDs. The Student Edition includes two CDs—one with the software media and one that includes the ESRI Software Documentation Library. The Quick Start Data and Tutorial CD and the Data and Maps CDs are not included with the Student Edition of ArcView 9.1. The evaluation install guide is referenced because it contains useful troubleshooting information that is also applicable to the Student Edition of ArcView 9.1. This FAQ can be used for Student Edition-specific questions. The Install Guide on bottom left is for the full version of ArcView 9.1. Refer to the Evaluation Install Guide [PDF-53.9 KB, 17 pages] for information regarding the software on this CD.
I cannot locate ArcView in my programs menu. What happened?
When you install ArcView 9.1, you are installing the ArcGIS Desktop applications ArcMap and ArcCatalog. ArcGIS is the name that appears in the Start program menu, not ArcView.
What are ArcMap and ArcCatalog?
ArcView 9.1 consists of two desktop applications: ArcMap and ArcCatalog. ArcMap provides data display, query, and analysis. ArcCatalog provides data management. When you want to begin using ArcView, you need to open each application.

Start > Programs > ArcGIS > ArcMap
Start > Programs > ArcGIS > ArcCatalog

Once open, you will see an application window for ArcMap–ArcView and a window for ArcCatalog–ArcView.
What is ArcReader?
ArcReader is a free, downloadable, easy-to-use product that allows anyone to view, explore, and print published map files (PMFs). ArcGIS Publisher is an extension to ArcView that converts map documents (MXD) to published map files (PMF). For more information on ArcReader, visit www.esri.com/arcreader.
Is there any functionality disabled in the ArcView 9.1 Student Edition compared to the full version of ArcView 9.1?
No. The Student Edition is the same as the full version of ArcView 9.1.

ArcGIS Extension Evaluation Software (Student Edition List)

Do the ArcGIS extensions work with ArcView 9.1?
Yes. The ArcGIS extensions work with ArcView 9.1. They are called the ArcGIS extensions since they work with ArcView 9.1, ArcEditor 9.1, and ArcInfo 9.1, collectively known as ArcGIS Desktop. The Student Edition includes the right to use Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst, Geostatistical Analyst, and Network Analyst extensions (subject to limitations and term of use).
Which ArcGIS extensions are available to evaluate on this CD?
While ArcGIS Spatial Analyst, ArcGIS Network Analyst, ArcGIS
3D Analyst, ArcGIS Schematics, ArcGIS Geostatistical Analyst, ArcGIS Data Interoperability, ArcGIS Publisher, ArcGIS Survey Analyst, ArcScan for ArcGIS, ArcGIS Tracking Analyst, and Maplex for ArcGIS are all included, the Student Edition includes the limited right to use ArcGIS ArcView, Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst, Geostatistical Analyst, and Network Analyst extensions for 365 calendar days.
Can I extend my evaluation of the ArcGIS extensions?
No. It is not possible to extend the evaluation period or reinstall the evaluation software on your computer once it has timed out.
When does my 365-day evaluation of the ArcGIS extensions begin?
The 365-day evaluation begins once you have installed and completed the registration process for the ArcGIS extensions. If you are registering by e-mail, fax, or mail, the evaluation period begins when you initially contact ESRI. If you have installed the software but have not yet registered the extensions, your evaluation time has not begun. Even if you have registered ArcView 9.1, the 365-day extension evaluation period has not begun until you register each extension. You can install and register the extensions separately from ArcView 9.1. Refer to the Evaluation Install Guide [PDF-53.9 KB, 17 pages] for complete details.
Where do I find the registration numbers for each of the ArcGIS extensions?
When using the Student Edition software with the ArcGIS extensions, you are not required to enter the registration numbers. During the registration process at the Evaluate the ArcGIS extensions panel, check the boxes next to the Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst, Geostatistical Analyst, and Network Analyst extensions. The registration wizard will recognize the same registration number you used for registering ArcView 9.1. The 12-digit registration number is located on the back of the CD case. Refer to the Evaluation Install Guide [PDF-53.9 KB, 17 pages] for complete details.
If I did not install the ArcGIS extensions during my initial installation of ArcView 9.1, how can I go back and install them?
If you did not choose to install the ArcGIS extensions during the initial installation of ArcView 9.1, they can be added later. We recommend that you install and register the ArcGIS extensions at the same time as ArcView 9.1. Your 365-day use of the ArcGIS extensions only begins when you register the software and not when you install the software. Refer to the Evaluation Install Guide [PDF-53.9 KB, 17 pages] for complete details.
