Tanner's map incorporates the latest Lewis and Clark expedition geography in the U.S. Northwest, but is entirely inaccurate in the U.S. Southwest, even showing rivers crossing the Sierra Nevada Mountains.

The beautiful cartouche in the map's lower left corner has many images of early 19th century America, including the natural bridge in Virginia and the falls of Niagara. This map was one of the first widely circulated maps of North America to show how the new Lewis and Clark geography fit into the entire continent's mapping.
