Geospatial News and Information for the Mining and Geology Communities
Welcome to GIS Mine Post, a semiannual publication from the Esri Natural Resources Team. Each issue provides a quick glimpse of industry news, upcoming events, reminders, and information about the mining industry's use of GIS. Starting with this issue, GIS Mine Post will only be available as a semi-annual e-newsletter (it was previously available in printed form).
Feature Stories
Organizing a Century of Data
As the largest gold mining company in the world, much of Barrick's stock market value depends on its reserve base (i.e., gold proven to be minable but not yet mined). With annual gold production of nearly 8 million ounces, Barrick must add at least that much gold to its reserve base each year or its stock market value will decline. Consequently, Barrick's geologic data directly affects the company's bottom line. Read more.
Cutting-Edge Prospects
Miranda Gold needs to present accurate geophysical data in order to acquire joint venture partners. To accomplish that, it uses state-of-the-art GIS software to analyze and present that information to key potential stakeholders. Read more.
OneGeology Geospatial Portal
Nearly every country in the world has a geologic survey, some of which are the oldest scientific organizations in existence. Geologic surveys, both federal and state, are responsible for maintaining the geologic data and knowledge of their territory. Access to this data benefits the economy of the nation and the health of its people and furthers geoscience. The problem is in accessing geologic data from so many contributors, because it has been collected, stored, and coded with huge variation. Fortunately, today's GIS technology helps collectively show what lies beneath the earth's surface. Read more.
