Facilities through GIS
Esri's Carbon Footprint Data Model provides a basic starter template to
empower GIS users interested in tackling the issue of measuring greenhouse
gases affecting global climate change. Download
the design template and contact Steve
Grisé if you would like to collaborate on a project to help us establish
some best practices in this area.

Masdar City in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) is using GIS to help design and
build the world's first carbon-neutral city. View the presentation [PDF] given at the

ArcGIS
Server Advanced Now Includes Analysis Extensions
The 9.3.1 release comes with the 3D, Geostatistical, Spatial, and Network
extensions at no additional cost.
Use the
extensions for more comprehensive facilities management:
- The 3D extension creates comprehensive views of
an entire building including cut/fill and line-of-sight.
- The Geostatistical extension allows
interpolation of possible flow and direction of airborne contaminants
for business continuity planning and emergency response exercises.
- The Spatial extension allows you to model by
analyzing raster data; perform integrated vector-raster analysis; and
derive new information to calculate distances and directions, study
flow, and view concentrations of features.
- The Network extension performs way finding
through, within, and among buildings and associated facilities.
ArcGIS
Data Interoperability Extension
Multiple CAD formats, as well as the Building Information Management
Specification, are supported by this extension, which enables ArcGIS users to
combine more types of information in projects, providing the most accurate
spatial data to their organizations.
ArcGIS
for AutoCAD
This free, downloadable tool provides seamless interoperability between
AutoCAD and the GIS platform.

2009
Esri International User Conference Proceedings
Hundreds of GIS professionals shared their work at the 2009 Esri
International User Conference. Many presenters have posted their papers
and presentations to share their work and help their peers further
develop their own GIS applications. After navigating to the presentation
page, search on facilities management.
NASA
in Inner Space
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) GIS team at the
Langley Research Center (LaRC) in Hampton, Virginia, has outlined its use of
GIS for handling the facility's space management across its 800-acre facility
in this informative white
paper [PDF].
University
Enhances Its Logistical Tracking System with GIS
The University of Texas, Dallas, developed an in-house application to more
effectively calculate the square footage of its campus structures. Named the
Logistical Tracking System, this application provides working maps of the
campus infrastructure and reaped a savings of $1.68 million during a two-year
period. Read
more.
Western
Michigan University Receives International Recognition
Western Michigan University (WMU), located in Kalamazoo, uses ArcGIS for its
innovative facilities management. The university received the 2009 Award for
Excellence, Effective and Innovative Practices, from APPA on July 9 in
Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. More information about WMU's Facilities
Management GIS initiative is available.

Adapx
One of the technologies NASA Langley Research Center relied on to create and
maintain the vast amounts of data it needs for space optimization is Adapx
Capturx for ArcGIS Field Data Redlining Solution. NASA was able to cut data
survey time in half, reduce errors by 80 percent and reduce overall survey
costs by a third. Read
