Local Exchange Carrier (LEC) boundaries enable users to determine market penetration by viewing the boundary extent of competitive telecommunication corporations and enable customers to analyze existing coverage of telephone service, compare markets, and examine market penetration. LECs represent a service area for a telecommunication utility that has been granted either a certificate of convenience, necessity, or operating authority to provide local exchange telephone service. Exchange boundaries define the rate center area. This is the area that a company will charge a certain rate for service. The exchange area is synonymous with the rate center. Wire centers (WC) represent a location, usually a building, containing telephone switching equipment. The WC boundary is a representation of the area served by the location. WC points are also provided in this product and represent the actual location of the primary central office. |
