Protected streets are those streets that have been reconstructed or resurfaced within the past five years and are subject to greater oversight in terms of allowable work on the street during the five-year protection period. In the context of the data warehouse, protected streets are defined starting with the capital project completion date. The date of protection is calculated by adding 60 months to the completion date, and a new data element, days to expiration, is created. The data warehouse viewer is able to thematically map the street segments using color range and line thickness.

By highlighting the streets soon to expire from protection, planners can better schedule work in the streets so that roadbeds are cut less frequently and, at times, just before they are likely to come up for scheduled resurfacing work.
