This map was developed as a communication and information tool to be used by Brownsville Public Utilities Board (BPUB) management in the event of a hurricane. The map is updated and distributed each June. Digital elevation data is color coded and ranges from 10 to 40 feet in elevation. This data was emplaced along with utility facilities, such as electric poles and lift stations, and planimetric data from the BPUB GIS. Federal Emergency Management Agency flood zones were overlaid. This map highlights the areas and facilities that are of particular concern in a heavy rain event such as a hurricane.

BPUB, the water, sewer, and electric service provider for Brownsville, Texas, has developed a full-featured GIS based on ESRI technologies. BPUB is currently integrating applications that range from work order management systems to engineering design systems. By harnessing the power of GIS combined with customer information and accounting systems, each department is enabled with the tools to increase effectiveness and productivity.
