Aeronautical Charting in New Zealand

Explorer Graphics Ltd. (EGL) produced a new national coverage of large-format aeronautical Visual Navigation and Planning Charts (20) for its clients, Airways Corporation and Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand.

Specification modifications and database enhancements resulted in the creation of a new generation of charts produced entirely with ArcMap. Production of these charts is based on the requirement to manage and update aeronautical data in a timely and effective manner from a central database. All data, including context topographical information, is managed within a personal geodatabase. Automated update procedures and special use of ArcGIS feature-linked annotation are essential to maintain data integrity and the accuracy of information representation.

Custom symbol sets have been designed, and Visual Basic development has automated map information presentation, the management of multiple data frames, and map templates for the creation of export files for offset print production. EGL plans to extend the current map production methodologies for the generation of aeronautical en route charts using the same methodology. These charts will use the same relevant aeronautical data for consistency, standardization of specifications, and database integrity.
