The Statewide Pavement Management section of the Alaska Department of Transportation and Public Facilities created and maintains a Web site to present the department's yearly pavement condition report. The application is served on the Statewide Program Management's Internet server. Before creation of this site, yearly pavement condition maps and project recommendations were posted on a series of static maps created in ArcView® and published on the Web in portable document file format. Although the static mapping was an improvement over the previous tabular listings and strip maps, the interactive mapping offers much more utility to viewers. The site enables clients to zoom to custom scales and extents; identify discrete condition values for particular sections of road; compare conditions from year to year by turning layers on and off; and view and analyze a variety of pavement condition indicators such as rutting, smoothness, and overall pavement condition index. The site was developed with ArcIMS® 4.0.1 as an HTML viewer with very limited customization. The developer is not proficient in ArcIMS customization, but with the help of the Esri instructor-led training course, was able to create the site in a relatively short time. Work continues to be done to add content to the site and improve the functionality and response time. |
