Routine well water sampling by Sarasota County Health Department staff showed high levels of vinyl chloride in several private drinking water wells in Venice, Florida. Vinyl chloride is a carcinogen at high levels, and it was determined that the affected homes in the area needed to be provided with safe drinking water. Maps, such as this one, were used with great effect to show the extent and severity of the problem to state and local officials. As a result of the study, a partnership was formed between the Florida Department of Health, Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and Sarasota County government to fund, design, and construct a waterline to the affected area and provide the residents with a source of clean and safe drinking water. |
