The 1996 amendments to the Federal Safe Drinking Water Act required all states to establish a Source Water Assessment Program (SWAP). Through SWAP, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection evaluated the susceptibility of public water sources (2,238 groundwater wells and 64 surface water intakes) according to eight categories of contamination.

The New Jersey statewide map shows the surface water and groundwater source areas for public community drinking water. An additional inset offers a more detailed look at a typical delineation area. For more information, including the goals of the program, the steps needed to create an assessment, and the results of the program, visit the New Jersey SWAP Web site.
