The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food, and Forestry (ODAFF), Animal Industry Services, is currently using Esri's GIS technology in the development of its National Animal Identification System (NAIS) and Premises Identification program. GIS is also an integral tool in the state's emergency preparedness protocols. The goal of NAIS is to trace the origin of a specific animal within 48 hours. As this database is developed, Oklahoma will be using GIS technology to achieve this goal. ODAFF has developed a program with Strategic Consulting International that inventories infrastructures critical to animal agriculture, enables the identification of infected premises, develops buffer zones surrounding infected premises, quickly identifies critical infrastructure data within these zones, and enables profiling of potential disease outbreaks. This program facilitates rapid data accessibility and field response capability in the face of an animal emergency, whether foreign, domestic, or the result of bioterrorism. |
