This map was developed to display the airports in the 2002 Texas Airport System Plan (TASP). The TASP is updated every four to five years and represents the system of 300 airports and three heliports that are eligible for state and federal funding managed by the Texas Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration. The system consists of those facilities deemed most essential to the state's and nation's air transportation systems and, when implemented, will result in almost 99 percent of the state's population and purchasing power being within a 30-minute drive of a TASP airport. The shape of the airport symbol depicts the role each facility plays in the system, from basic utility airports with a low level of light aircraft activity to the primary commercial service airports that serve large transport and passenger aircraft. Symbol colors are used to represent the long-range design standard planned for each facility. These standards are determined by the type of aircraft the facility is expected to serve and define such criteria as minimum runway length and width as well as pavement strengths and other amenities required for each airport category. |
