Uintah County had many road maps that differed from one to another. The county needed an accurate and uniform map to display, sell, and give to other agencies, such as the dispatcher, fire marshal, gold cross, search and rescue, and sheriff, for coordination of emergency efforts.

More than 7,000 miles of road were recorded and numbered with a GPS unit, and all major rivers and lakes were digitized from 1996 digital orthophoto quads into ArcMap. Land status and all the other base layers on the map were updated and verified.

This map and data has been used in many ways, ranging from finding hunting and fishing spots to locating missing persons and decreasing the response time to accidents in both residential and remote areas of Uintah County.

This simple GIS application has increased accuracy, which saves lives and time; helped to manage the infrastructure and rich resources of oil and gas in the county; and increased communication between different agencies.
