The Newport Bay Watershed is located in Orange County, California, and drains nearly one-fifth of the county (approximately 150 sq. miles). The watershed encompasses foothill regions, as well as alluvial and coastal plains, and until the last few decades the area was predominantly open space and agricultural land. The increased demand for housing in Orange County has significantly altered this landscape. Today, the watershed area is mostly urban. Land use includes retail commercial, professional enterprises, and large-scale residential developments. Intensive urban growth has raised concerns about the long-term health of the watershed, and several studies were initiated to address water quality problems. Currently, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in conjunction with Orange County is conducting a multiagency feasibility study to investigate watershed issues. The results and recommendations of the study will address impacts to Upper Newport Bay including sediment transport, water quality, operations, and maintenance activities. The study will also develop an integrated management plan to maintain and enhance activities that contribute to a healthy watershed. This map was prepared for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers study and is used by various county agencies at public hearings to discuss different aspects of the project. |
