GreenInfo Network developed the Sphere of Influence map series (above) to help a coalition of 60 conservation nonprofits in the Sierra Nevada understand where they share common issues and which issues are not being addressed by current efforts. The map shows 15 issue areas, and the polygons represent each group's "turf" for an issue area. The large number of groups required developing extensive display techniques of line weight and color to distinguish each group from the other.

Greenbelt Alliance's At-Risk map (right) shows lands in the path of suburban sprawl in the California Bay Area. Careful attention to map colors was required for the greatest viewer impact. Shaded relief was downsampled to avoid visual noise and emphasize basic patterns. There are more GreenInfo maps online.
