Thematic representation of different kinds of attributes and statistical information through maps and diagrams is valuable to a variety of data users. A thematic map enables the statistics to speak through visual representation of the facts and further enables their geographic interpretation.
The main objective of these maps is to demonstrate the capability of GIS in statistical analysis and representation of themes in terms of their geographic distribution and interrelationships. These thematic maps representing some of the housing and population characteristics in Qatar are based on the general population and housing census conducted by the country in 1997.
All the maps are prepared through ARC Macro Language programming in ArcInfo. The attribute (statistical) data is tied to its spatial unit and displayed using different techniques of thematic mapping. The methodology for representation varies from one map to another and includes the dot method of population distribution to choropleth mapping and representation through different types of charts.
