In 1998, the Federal Emergency Management Agency designated a portion of the city of Lakewood to be within a 100-year floodplain or special flood hazard area (SFHA). At that time, property owners within the SFHA were given a limited time opportunity to purchase flood insurance at a discounted or preferred policy rate. All insurance policies purchased after the deadline were at the standard insurance rate.
The Flood Insurance Policy Locations map shows where flood insurance policies were purchased in relation to the location of the SFHA and demonstrates the effectiveness of the flood zone education campaign promoted by the city of Lakewood. Most of the insurance policies purchased were within the SFHA. Approximately 70 percent of those policies were purchased before the effective date of the flood map and at the discounted or preferred policy rate, which saved individual property owners hundreds of dollars in insurance premiums.
