The rapid expansion of the city of Wichita has created some public safety issues for residents and businesses on the outskirts of town. The issue raised is whether the current fire stations can serve the expanded areas of Wichita in the required response time. Wichita city staff recommended a fire study to identify possible solutions for maintaining response times throughout the city as annexation and new development at the edge of town expands the service area.

Historical Fire Station Locations

GIS is a valuable tool for investigating and analyzing sites to locate and relocate fire stations. Response time allocation, future population projections, development patterns, and data from existing E-911 calls were analyzed in the GIS to identify fire station locations that would provide the best coverage to this growing city.
