Assessing Development in Martis Valley, California

Created for Sierra Watch, a citizen advocacy organization, this map portrays existing and planned development near Lake Tahoe. The map has helped the group focus on habitat and other impacts of proposed resort development. Cartographically, it is highly effective in using shaded relief to inform but not overpower the development information.

San Francisco Bay Estuary--Tidal Wetlands, Then and Now

This poster map was originally created as a centerfold for Bay Nature magazine. It depicts the San Francisco Bay Area as its landforms existed before settlement and shows the extent of wetlands filling and diking. The color scheme is intentionally rich, and the map shows the bathymetry of the San Francisco Bay--the first time this information has been mapped with the topography of the region forming a complete vision of the area.

Forest Types and Watersheds in California

Used to assist organization strategy planning by Environment Now, this poster shows major forest types in California in relation to watershed and jurisdictional data. The map seeks to balance relief with thematic data while providing legible detail in roads and other boundary data. It steps the viewer into the information rather than presenting it all at a level of first impression. At the same time, its detail enables close inspection.

Transit Outdoors

Prepared for Bay Nature magazine, this offset-produced map shows linkages between public open space and the San Francisco Bay Area bus and other transit systems. More than 60,000 copies were produced and distributed. The challenge was to create a very pale shaded relief to highlight the parks and transit connections. The original retains hill forms in the white areas and detailed information in the shadows of the parklands.
