This map depicts early oil fields in the West Virginia Mountains producing since 1895. Four views show West Virginian wells and topography, close-up infrastructure information such as roads and rivers, a perspective view looking to the southwest, and detailed infrastructure information (wells and pipelines) in the northeastern area.

Extensive and complex data can be distilled effectively for the public's appreciation of the historic significance of oil production in the area. Birds-eye views are especially helpful in drawing users into a map to appreciate more data in context. Societal GIS starts with public access to relatively esoteric data.
