This map is a document used by the CoServ GIS department to provide electric crews and engineers with information in a more consistent, uniform manner. Standardized rendering and symbology enable CoServ to communicate with the electric crews more effectively. The use of color in this map is important because red, green, and blue not only mean something to the crew, but these colors are also meaningful in the field. Electric crews and engineers can use the map to identify lines and equipment by phase (e.g., single phase A, single phase B, single phase C, or A phase transformer). Complex rendering can aid engineers in electric load balancing, line crews in construction and switching, and dispatchers in outage situations.
Map symbology will continue to play an integral part in the way GIS communicates with those who are in the field. As more and more data fields are attributed, the GIS team at CoServ can dig deeper into exploring new ways to communicate through symbology and labeling. |
