D.C. Vicinity Map and Visitor’s Guide

The Washington, D.C., Vicinity map was derived from AAA’s detailed nationwide ArcSDE database. All AAA GIS maps, whether in digital or paper format, contain proprietary information provided by AAA’s various travel information departments and are designed to meet the travel needs of its members. GIS cartographers generalize the spatial data for each map product using rules for specific map types and scales. The AAA GIS ArcSDE master database contains more than 50 GB of data and supports cartographic efforts in both paper and electronic applications. Cartographic edits are applied to product specific layers, while generalized edits are applied to the master data layers. Individual map views have custom projection parameters. The Washington, D.C., Vicinity map illustrates the data presentation flexibility inherent with the scalable data within the AAA GIS database.

AAA has been producing quality maps since 1911. AAA GIS incorporates traditional cartographic techniques, automated production processes, and a multilayered GIS database to produce and update annually more than 65 sheet maps, 600 TourBook maps, and a North American Road Atlas for the association’s 47 million members.
