As part of the Earthquake Probability Investigation of Greater Tokyo project, Serkan Bozkurt is visualizing the complex three-dimensional environment of the Kanto region. The project launches an international collaboration to develop a comprehensive description and understanding of earthquake occurrence in greater Tokyo. Project scientists are using these three-dimensional GIS visualizations to advance earthquake models and forecasting techniques. These are some sample visualizations from the study that shows topography, bathymetry along with fault lines, active volcanoes, seismic activity, and tectonic plates beneath the region. Topography and bathymetry are vertically exaggerated by a factor of two. Additional images and information can be found at the USGS Web site.
