Lakewood's Recreation and Community Services Department requested a map using address information from its recreation class registration database. Staff members were interested in seeing the distribution of registered recreation class attendees within the Los Angeles basin. Surprisingly, the map showed that the city's recreation classes had attendees residing from as far away as Lake Elsinore, Northridge, and Rancho Cucamonga. The map not only revealed that people were commuting long distances to Lakewood for work and other purposes, but they were also staying to enjoy Lakewood's award-winning parks and recreation programs.
